Top packing tips and tricks you need to know

  • Get rid of things you do not need.
  • Schedule your packing in advance.
  • Pack your essentials separately to your other belongings.
  • Prepare proper moving equipment.
  • Use the right box sizes when packing items.
  • Heavy items at the bottom, lighter items at the top.
  • Label your boxes.

1. Get rid of things you do not need

Realistically, it would be hard to pack and transport all your belongings to your new place. Over the years, you would have picked items here and there that you do not use, but you still cannot throw away. It may be for sentimental reasons or because you think you can still use it in the future. Still, these are items that you can live without. Note all the items you have and choose the most important ones to transport. After that, only pick a few items that you may need.

Finally, you should sell or give away the rest that you do not use anymore. This allows you to pack less and have an easier time during the move.

2. Schedule your packing in advance

If you plan to pack your items yourself, you should start packing way in advance. You must have numerous items to bring to your new place, and most of those are fragile or easily damaged. Rushing the packing of these items can lead to accidental damages or loose packaging – which can also lead to damages.

Additionally, you should pack in advance because you never know how many boxes you’ll need when packing your belongings. The worst thing you can do is cram so many items in one box just to see them clutter-up and get broken. If you don’t have much packing experience, this is especially important.

3. Pack your essentials separately to your other belongings

Depending on the distance of your next home, your moving truck could reach your new home after several hours. However, there are cases when accidents happen, or trucks get lost. When this happens, you will only be temporarily left with what you have in your hands.

This is the reason why you should not place essentials in your packed boxes. For example, your laptop, toothbrush, medications, important paperwork, and even a change of clothes should be with you during the move. That way, you can still do your basic tasks while waiting for your moving truck to arrive in one piece.

4. Prepare proper moving equipment

When packing, the last thing you want is to find out that you lack tape, box cutters, markers, garbage bags, or even boxes. Not only will you waste time packing, but you will also need to put effort into going to the store to buy those items in bulk again.

Have a reasonable estimate on how many items you’ll need to prepare for the move, and then add a bit more. It is better to have more equipment (that you can reuse in the future) than have less than needed during the packing process.

5. Use the right box sizes when packing items

Heavy and breakable items should be in smaller boxes; lighter items like pillows and linens can be packed in bigger boxes or heavy-duty garbage bags. This way, your fragile items will be secured tightly, while your lighter items can be packed together with items of the same type.

It will help you carry the boxes easier while moving. The last thing you want is a large box filled with heavy and breakable items that you will be struggling to carry during the move.

6. Heavy items at the bottom, lighter items at the top

This rule applies when you pack heavy and light items together. By doing so, the heavy items won’t damage the light items.

7. Label your boxes

You will have lots boxes during your move to your next place. You do not want to keep opening each box just to find the item you are looking for. To have an easier time unpacking, the team here at Best Removalist Newcastle recommends that you label your boxes as you pack them. It can be as simple as “Books”, “Toys”, or “Consoles”. You will find it much easier to unpack after your move when you categorise the items.

Label your boxes by room and group them

Apart from categorising your packages per category, it would also help to organise them by room. For example, kitchen items should go together, while living room items should be placed near each other. If you are moving as a family, label the boxes depending on whose room the boxes are for. For example, “Owen’s Bedroom” or “Janice’s Study”.

8. Correctly tape-up your moving boxes

Sealing a box with tape is not quite as easy as it might seem. Here are some basic steps to follow:

  • Open out the box and close 1 flap in. Close the next flap under the previous flap. Do this for all flaps.
  • Tape over all visible flap edges, going over the side of the box by at least 15cm.
  • Tape around all four edges and corners of the bottom of the box.
  • Fill box accordingly.
  • If box is filled with absolute essentials, leave it open until the last minute.
  • If not, close the first top flap in. Close the next flap under the previous flap. Do this for all flaps.
  • Tape over all visible flap edges, going over the side of the box by at least 15cm.
  • Tape around all four edges and corners of the top of the box.

9. Properly pack expensive appliances

These are usually easily breakable, and it would cost a lot to replace them. Don’t just stuff them in a box and call it a day, cover the items in bubble wrap and make sure the boxes are stable, without the possibility of falling over. If you are not confident moving home with expensive, breakable and difficult to replace items, contact professional packing team such as Best Removalist Newcastle to help you.
